Bead Making Kits

How To Choose A Soap Making Kit

When you decide you would like to try making your own homemade soap, soap-making-kits are a great way to start. From children to adults there are many different kinds of soap making kits that are available, and I suspect that this Christmas these will become very popular item as they are relatively inexpensive and yet can give hours of pleasure to the recipient.

The best place to start to look for a good kit is at your local craft store. They should carry ones that are high quality and will have all the accessories that you need to get started. This would be the first place that I would look if considering buying a kit for home use, especially if it is one for a child.

There are also ones that are available for adults and although you may find some in your local Target store, I still recommend that you purchase a high quality soap-making-kit from a local craft store with a good reputation.

Soap making is easy if you start out with the basics and have goo directions to follow. For those who spend their money on less expensive kits, it's hard to guarantee what kind of product you might be getting. Craft-stores will carry quality kits, and usually one of the sales people will have a certain amount of knowledge so that they can help you to pick out the best one possible.

You should also look for a wide assortment to choose from. From one that are using glycerin to ones that are for hot process soaps there should be a wide variety. Glycerin soap kits are by far the easiest for the beginner, but for someone who is brave, and wants to be a bit more adventuresome, there should also be ones available that are for cream soaps, vegan soaps and cold process.

Some of the most important things to look for when buying a kit is to be sure that they include good instructions, recipes that are easy for a beginner, as well as safety equipment that you will need for the soap making process.

Once you've move past the stage of needing the basics to get started you can look into classes that are held locally in your area. This should help to boost you up to a more advanced level, while at the same time providing you with a good instructor to help you along the way.

Many craft stores will also have these classes and I consider them to be a very wise and prudent investment. Craft store classes are also more likely to be offered for free or at a very small cost, whereas more structured classes will often be a lot more expensive.

Some of the basic ingredients that you should find in a soap making kit are lye, essential oils or fragrances as well as the fat that you will need for this process. Some of the higher end ones will have things to help you cut your batch and possibly even material to help you package them once you have completed your first batch.

The one thing they all should have are the safety tools necessary. Make sure yours comes with a set of safety glasses as well as safety gloves, especially if you are going to be using lye to make your soaps.

If you are considering a soap making kit as a gift for a child or adult you will be providing them with hours of wonderfully creative time. Even mothers and children can do this together, or you can even make it a family project.

Nothing is more exciting than you make your first batch of homemade soap and then to actually use it. Look at our website for more information on soap making kits if you are considering buying one for yourself or as a gift.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Bead-Making Kits?
I like to do beadery, but the cost of beads is sort of outlandish I've noticed. I'd like to be more resourceful, especially if all goes as planned and I open up a business within the next calendar year. This leads me to question...

Where can I go about purchasing a bead-making kit? What do the prices usually range as being?
Also, would you recommend a particular type for beginners?

    Thanks in advance. :)

    • ANSWER:
      Hope this helps.
      Have fun!

  2. QUESTION:
In glass bead making what brand is the best bead release?
This question is intended for those who have experience with glass bead making. I just recently acquired a glass bead making kit from the Fireworks brand. The bead release flakes off the mandrels when I heat them, which of course means I can't even begin to put glass on the mandrel or it would stick. I'm wondering what brand you might recommend for bead release.

    • ANSWER:
I agree with sludge plus. and you can add water, get it the consistency you want. If it is kept it too hot on the flame, most any bead release flakes. just warm it up further out in the flame. you want to warm your mandrels, not heat them up like glass.

  3. QUESTION:
    Bead making kit?
Does anyone know where to get it and how much it costs? I really like beads...I practically feel naked without them, but 1 string costs approximately and I can't keep buying them, so I decided I'm going to make my own. Help?

    • ANSWER:
There are loads of beads you can make with polymer clay**, (but not glass beads, etc., of course).

You can even make polymer clay look convincingly like metal, wood, stone, semi-precious stone like turquoise or jade, etc., then make beads from that.
Polymer clay beads can also be made in any size, shape or color you can dream up, and holes can be created before or after baking the clay (in a home oven, toaster oven, or even on a stove top in a special way, etc.), or other connectors added to the clay.

If you're interested in making beads with polymer clay, check out at least this page:
      http://glassattic.com/polymer/beads.htm

Then for making your beads have all kinds of colors, or patterns, or specical surface effects, check out all the other possibilities from this page for making "fauxs", using paints, metallic powders, etc., etc.:
      http://glassattic.com/polymer/contents.htm
(...to browse, just scroll all the way down... then when you find a page you'd like to investigate, chlick on its name from inside the alphabetical navigation bar on the left side of the page, to go to it)

**some of the brands of polymer clay are Premo, FimoClassic, FimoSoft, Kato Polyclay, Sculpey III, and Cernit

Glass Bead Making, Beginner Torch Not Working?
I ordered a beginner glass bead kit with a torch and everything. I have been using simple propane just to start off with but I have notice that my torch is catching a flame. I am not sure what is going on. I hear the propane going threw the torch, but the flame will only catch for a second. Can anyone help???

    • ANSWER:
Is there any contact information on the box where you can ask the manufacturer? Do they have a web site where you may be able to find a contact number. You may have a defected torch which may be dangerous. Before anything bad happens, try to get a hold of the manufacturer, be safe.

Chameleon Beads

The Basis For Unique Bracelets Using Compatible Beads Are Pandora, Trollbeads And Chamilia Chains

The popular fashion for personalised bracelets using Murano glass and Silver beads can be a way of preserving special memories.

The basis of the bracelet is a silver or gold chain onto which the beads are threaded using a system that keeps them in place when spaced out, and prevents them from falling off when the bracelet is removed.

There are three main brands, Trollbeads, Pandora and Chamilia, and two of them were originally invented in Denmark.

The Aagaard family from Copenhagen devised the Trollbead system in 1976. The family continues to own the brand and the collection now contains several hundred beads in a variety of materials including silver, gold, glass and natural stones.

Every bead has its own little story drawing on mythology, astrology, animals, flowers and familiar everyday objects.

Denmark is where the Pandora system also originated. Pandora started 1982, also from a shop in Copenhagen, owned by goldsmith P.Enevoldsen and his wife.

The Pandora bracelet's own threaded system divides each bracelet into three sections. Inidivudal beads are also threaded on tgheir insides so that they can be screwed onto any section of the bracelet in whatever arrangement its owner chooses.

Pandora in Greek mythology was a woman created by the god Hefaistos. She was sent to earth with a box and all the evils of the world were let loose when she opened it, leaving only hope and opportunity remaining.

Chamilia also uses a threading system for its bracelets. It also supplies locks that can be positioned anywhere on the bracelet to keep the beads in place if the bracelet is not fully loaded. You can also make a double bracelet or necklace with Chamilia's connectors.

The name Chamilia comes from the chameleon and describes the flexibility of the bracelet that can be changed to suit the wearer's tastes and mood, or for an event to match an outfit, in the same way that the chameleon adapts its appearance to the environment and surroundings it is in.

These systems all make it possible to assemble your own unique bracelet either using the companies' own ranges of beads or using Pandora, Trollbead and Chamilia compatible beads. You can switch the beads around on the chains so that they don't always appear in the same order.

Choosing the bracelet that will form the basis is the first step to creating a unique bracelet. It is important to choose a bracelet large enough to leave enough space on to add the bead collection.

Your jeweller, stocking a range of beads compatible with the three brands, or the branded beads themselves, will be able to help you calculate the length of bracelet you will need.

Then you will be able to select those beads, made of the famous Murano glass, or ones that are compatible with the bracelets and mix them with silver engraved beads or use them alone in the colours you want to create a unique, special and very personal item of jewellery that can also be used to mark special events throughout your life in the same way as traditional charm bracelets.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
If I were to get this dress for my prom, what shoes do you think I should wear with it ...?
and please leave links to shops with ideal shoes!

So I want to go for a more vintage look rather than the classic ball gowns made of silk. This is the dress I really really like:

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/53718937/the-flared-chameleon-full-length-gown?ref=sr_gallery_21&ga_search_query=chameleon+dress+&ga_search_type=all&ga_page=&order=&includes[0]=tags&includes[1]=title

And I'm going to have my hair as a 'Titanic inspired messy updo" and wrap pearl beads around it. So do you have any idea on shoes, I don't know whether to go for matching or to do a colour clash thing, so my shoes stand out from the dress. Any ideas and please what styles and leave links xD
I'd wear it as the v-neck style though xD but I thought a chameleon dress would be handy if I then decided i'd perfer strapless of over the shoulder, but i'm dead keen on the colour and I love how its made of velvet and just the general vintage formal element!

    • ANSWER:
I think anything like pearly creamy color since the pearl beads in your hair! I dont think anything to distracting thought because the dress is beautiful but it has some detail in it.

  2. QUESTION:
Is this a good poem to turn into my CA class?
My best attempt at a poem:

    This man dresses in ways,
That makes the ladies wish for his gaze
    The man cares more for style;
He values his life in drinks and girls,
And rarely ever looks for pearls
Though the man is just twenty-three,
He looks for those who will never be
    With him in troubled times,
For they care only for his dimes
But this is a sorrowful man…
He regrets that he may never decide,
    On only one everlasting bride.

He wipes the beads of sweat off from his head
And wonders if he’d be better off dead.
He used to play the game he loved,
    Hockey was once his beloved
He follows the crowd to try to fit in,
And turned out different than what he had been
He fears that people would then see,
What he tries to hide from thee
That he once just a nerd,
And was an outcast to the herd.

If he was an animal he’d be a chameleon,
Changing his ways just to blend in
He like to be like James Bond,
Getting the girls and danger to respond
He has a habit of making plans,
But goes off with his own clan
    He likes the badass attitude,
But ends up just like any other dude
He loves all women, drugs, and drinks,
But I doubt he ever stops and thinks
That if he’d try to be his own man,
That he would increase his own lifespan?

He tries to impress others by winning a fight,
But it turns out to be an ugly sight
He knows that he is wrong,
But instead tries to be headstrong
He lies to himself saying “this is the life”,
And thinks he needs a knife
    But deep down he knows,
This is not how life goes
He then retreats to his place,
    And disappears without a trace
And he knows that he is wrong.

  3. QUESTION:
    Bearded Dragon Supplies?
    I'm getting a beardie(:
I found this cheap chameleon package online and I was wondering if it had everything a bearded dragon needed.

    This is what it includes:

    65 Gallon Reptarium (28x16.5x30"),
    24" UV Hood,
    18" UV 5.0 Bulb,
    Clip Lamp,
    Heat Bulb,
    Large Tropical Vines,
    High Range Thermometer,
    4 Quarts Green Moss.

Is the package missing anything a beaded dragon needs to live happy and as long as possible?

Also, is there anything in the package I don't need?

    • ANSWER:
a uv 5.0 is not sufficient enough for a bearded dragon, mine both have repti sun 10.0 as it emits more uv, my chameleon also had a 10.0 as the 5.0 was making her metabolic bone disorder worse.please do not use this with a bearded dragon also a chameleon viv will probably be bigger height wise as they like to climb whereas bearded dragons tanks need to be bigger length and width wise rather than by height.I would suggest NOT using a chameleon setup for a beardie as they are two totally different reptiles

Tiaras: Now You Can Feel Like A Princess On Your Big Day

Centuries ago tiaras were worn only by the very rich or by royalty. They were meant to symbolize wealth, prosperity, and regality. Princesses, queens, and duchesses wore them at state dinners and other official functions.

Actually, they probably wore them all the time. Wear a tiara to breakfast. Wear one to the market. Wear it just lounging around the castle. If you are royalty, why not revel in it?

The flip side of the coin is that historically there were not a whole lot of opportunities for the average woman to wear a tiara. Even today, unless you are Wonder Woman or the winner of a beauty pageant, you probably arent going to be wearing a tiara too often. Sure, there will be big occasions in your life. But can you imagine accepting a Pulitzer Prize while wearing a tiara? People would think you were insane.

There is one occasion, however, when it is perfectly normal for a woman to wear a tiara. That is, of course, on her wedding day. It is the one day of a womans life when it isnt just acceptable for her to look and feel like a princess, it is expected. Here are a few examples of gorgeous tiaras that will make your big day all the more special.

The Crystal and Pearl Tiara is a gorgeous piece that will make a striking impact on your wedding guests. Flower shapes rise from the base of the tiara and are highlighted by glimmering crystals and finely polished pearls. It is truly a headpiece built for a queen.

If you are looking for a more dense and complex look, you cant go wrong with the Crystal Open Back Tiara. Rhinestones, pearls, and crystals seem to explode from the silver base of this tiara, giving them the appearance of bubbles rising from the bottom of the ocean.

The rhinestone floral motif featured on the Embellished Mid Crystal Rhinestone Floral Tiara is so intricate that it almost resembles a complex script font. Pearls and pave leaves intermingle throughout a glimmering array of rhinestones and crystals to form a pattern you could get lost inside of.

Queen Elizabeth II was said to possess the worlds most extensive and expensive collection of tiaras. The Mid Tiara Embellished with Beads and Crystals is gorgeous enough to fit right in with the rest of her collection. The construction appears delicate and decisively formal. Beads and crystals cluster together in the front while shimmering strands seem to burst from the center like solar flares on the surface of the sun.

The main feature of the Embellished Tiara with Crystal Swirl Motif and Oval Stones is the wave-like swirls that rise up all around it. Wearing this tiara at a wedding on the beach will make a bride feel like a goddess of the sea. It also features three large oval crystal stones. One of them sits at the top center of the tiara while the other two are slightly lower and on the sides.

The Tall Silver Tiara with Metal Scroll, Rhinestones, and Pearls is a dramatic headpiece that is sure to stand out. It goes well with a more subdued hairstyle because of the strong impression that it makes. If you dont feel like spending hours on your hair on your wedding day, it is easy to let this tiara do all the heavy lifting for you.

Many brides think that tiaras only pair well with an updo and other short or pulled-back styles. This really just depends on the tiara you are wearing though. The Gold Brushed Metal Tiara with Rhinestones has an earthy floral motif that looks unbelievable when it rests on long, flowing locks of hair. Matched with a simple and fashionable dress, it makes a bride look more like an ethereal medieval princess.

The Brushed Metallic Leaf Tiara is another one that hearkens back to the golden age of tiaras. It has a simple and classic pattern of soft gold interspersed with rhinestones and freshwater pearls. It measures 14 1/4 by 5 1/2 by 1 1/4.

Before we mentioned that there are not many occasions for a woman to wear a tiara. This is true, but the Crystal Tiara becomes a Necklace defies that rule. On your wedding day this is a gorgeous low and subtle crystal tiara. It adds a dash of sparkle but it wont outshine your hairdo or your dress. However, rather than being a one-time thing, this tiara transforms into a lovely necklace so it can be worn again and again to special occasions long after your big day.

The fact remains, however, that tiara opportunities are few and far between. Outside of your super sweet 16 party and your Sailor Moon Halloween costume, the odds of finding a good excuse to wear a tiara are pretty slim. A womans wedding day is one of the few opportunities in her life to really live it up and feel like a princess. A tiara is a simple and elegant way to help do that.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
I make custom jewelry made of beads, crystals and natural stones. I like to start selling them to local shops
How would i approach local business into carrying my products. What Prices should i be asking? assuming my cost of materials is ten dollars for necklace, 7 dollars for bracelets and 5 dollars for earings?

    • ANSWER:
I would approach shops owned by locals, not chain stores. Very few chain stores will carry local goods -- their inventory is determined by the larger company, rather than the individual outlet.

When approaching the stores, consider it just like a job interview. Make an appointment first. Show up dressed nice, be polite, and bring a wide variety of your work to show them. Give the shopkeeper the opportunity to evaluate the work -- maybe she has some ideas about particular styles she thinks would sell. If the store is already successful, the shopkeeper must have a good eye for choosing merchandise. Try to learn from her opinions.

You need to figure that the store will want to make at least "number" -- the amount they pay for the item. This is a good place to start. You probably want to make "number" on your items, too, so in materials for a bracelet might be sold to the shopkeeper for .

The shopkeeper then needs to make about the same amount to make it worth her while to sell the item. So we're up to a bracelet. Compare similar items in other stores, and be honest with yourself: will my bracelet sell for ?

If the answer is no, here are a few things to consider:

      (1) other ways to sell your item. How about eBay? You could ask for the item and sell it directly to the consumer. A lot of people make very good livings on eBay! I buy things there almost every week. Another online way to sell is to register a website on Yahoo and sell your items through their online stores. How about craft fairs?

      (2) lowering your costs. Are you paying retail prices for your materials? If you are serious about this project, you may wish to buy your beads from a wholesale supplier, usually at about half the retail cost. This will involve some investment, as you will need to buy much larger quantities than you do at a retail store. Wholesalers for every item in the world can be found on the internet, and even on eBay. Can you get the price of the materials for that bracelet down to 3 or 4 dollars?

I wish you the best of luck -- this sounds like a very exciting project!

i am looking for a strong glue so i can glue crystals.beads etc to leather that will not turn rubbery?
i have tried alot of glues and i really want a glue that will bond and really hold and is not easy to pull off.

    • ANSWER:
The problem with sewing them on is that perhaps they will need an industrial-strength needle - that is, depending on the thickness of the leather.

Have you tried plastic-modelling glue? The stuff dries instantly and is incredibly strong. I'm sure you could get it from many art/craft/hardware stores around. The type I have is Bostik, who specialise in glues and that type of stuff. The glue container is small with a cone-like lid, if you want to look out for it.

      Good luck. :)

Silver turquoise pendants have been popular for several centuries now, and today has claimed the spot of being the most popular and valuable opaque gemstone for fashion and fine jewelry. Because of this demand for turquoise, many sources around the world have been depleted, and additional exploration notwithstanding, the available turquoise in the world is coming smaller. One of the unfortunate aspects of this high demand is that the market has been flooded with fakes. So when you buy turquoise jewelry, you would be well advised to be cautious. Here are a few points to consider when buying turquoise:

  • When buying turquoise jewelry, seek out stores - local or online, as you choose - that have a strong reputation for honesty and integrity. As the seller to put his or her claims about the turquoise in writing.
  • Decide whether you want to buy stabilized turquoise or natural, untreated turquoise. Natural gem-quality turquoise is rare and quite expensive. If you are buying a piece of expensive fine jewelry, then you will likely want to buy natural turquoise. On the other hand, if you are buying fashion jewelry costs a few tens of dollars, you would be wise to buy jewelry with stabilized turquoise.
  • Plastic imitations are quite common. To see if your "stone" is a plastic fake, heat a pin and touch it to the "stone" in an inconspicuous spot. If it melts, you know that you have a fake.
  • Howlite is another fake that is common in the marketplace. Howlite is a form of calcium carbonate. If you drop a tiny quantity of dilute hydrochloric acid on the howlite, it is fizz and turn a shade of green. Genuine turquoise will have no reaction.
  • In some cases, turquoise beads are used in a necklace. When used in a white pearl necklace or other similar application, the turquoise bead will have a drilled hole. Look into the hole, and if you see white, you most likely have a fake.

This is also an appropriate place to discuss the process of stabilizing turquoise. Most natural turquoise is so soft that it cannot be used directly in jewelry. So it must be first stabilized before being used in jewelry. This is done by infusing the stone with a stabilizing agent such as epoxy resin or vaporized silica. Using epoxy resin is more common and less expensive than the silica treatment. Silica stabilization cannot be identified even by experienced gemologists. On the other hand, an experienced gemologist can see globules of epoxy resin under magnification. Gemologists the world over agree that stabilized turquoise is genuine turquoise.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
how do you make a hole bigger in gemstone beads?
i need to make the holes big enough to fit hemp string into, but the gemstone beads are made for stringing onto wire.
do i have to go get it specially done by a jeweler of something? if so, how much would that be?

and if i were to do it at home, how?
here is a list of the types of gemstones, if that matters to how i would do it:

    amazonite
    amber
    amethyst
    aventurine
    azurite
    bloodstone
    blue lace agate
    boji stone
    carnelian
    chrysocolla
    citrine
    cookeite
    garnet
    hematite
    howlite
    jasper
    kunzite
    lapis lazuli
    malachite
    moonstone
    moss agate
    opal
    peridot
    petrified wood
    rhodochrosite
    rhodonite
    rose quartz
    sugilite
    tiger eye
    topaz
    tourmaline
    turqouise
    tree agate
    sodalite
    tiger eye
    chrysocolla

i know thats a long list, but im probably not getting every single one...im getting most, though.
i just dont want to try and make a bigger hole and end up ruining the beads
yeah i know it wont look like its supposed to...i just kinda wanna try it. what kind of screw thingy doi put in the drill?

    • ANSWER:
That would be very difficult. Even if you had the right kind of drill and some sort of tiny vice to hold them, you might crack them. If you do this you will need to wear safety goggles and a mask like surgeons wear. You don't want gemstone dust in your lungs.

This is what I do to add beads with small holes to hemp: get either thin plastic coated wire that is made for beading, or fishing line. Start with the number of hemp strands you would normally use, and tie it very firmly into the starting knot. As you are knotting, keep the extra line with the inner hemp strand so it won't show. When you want to add a bead, knot the line around the inner hemp strand for more strength, add a bead, knot again, then carry on as usual.

  2. QUESTION:
How do I make a wire ring with a cabochon?
I have several small oval cabochons (natural howlite). My sister and mom love Howlite but only like to wear rings. I'd like to make wire-wrapped rings using the cabochons (just one per ring), but can't seem to find any tutorials for this online. I'd rather not experiment TOO much as the wire I have is sterling silver and kinda expensive. :) Anyone have any advice?

I'm familiar with wire rings in general; I've made them using beads before, but never cabochons. I'm not sure how to secure the stones within the wire and then hook that onto the ring loop. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
About.com has a couple of excellent tutorials, including one that makes shows how to make a ring and another on how to make a necklace that sound like what you want. Most teachers will recommend that you use less expensive wire to learn with, because mistakes can be very costly otherwise. I'd recommend getting some less expensive wire (it won't go to waste if you continue learning) and visit the jewelry making section at about.com.

  3. QUESTION:
What do I need to start making beaded western necklaces?
I am looking to start making my own beaded western necklaces. I plan on using howlite stones and conchos, but I am not sure where to start. I have found a few websites with the stones but have not found many with the conchos and pendants. I am looking for the conchos and cross pendants. I don't exactly know how to begin making them though and would like a little input. Wire use, clasps, tools, etc. If there is a book or website that may be helpful as well!

How to Make Tri-strand Bead Necklaces

If it is true as they say that a cord of three strands is not easily broken then this tri-strand beaded necklace ought to last till eternity. The simple design is a dream to make, the perfect item for freshers and yet it has an elegance and sophistication to it which is missing in projects by freshers.

To make a tri-strand necklace, you will require - craft thread, a needle, a pair of sharp scissors, a necklace clasp of any kind. You may use the barrel closures 3 packages of 11/0 seed beads.

Once you make the necklace and get the knack of it, you might like to experiment with various beads. Like, utilizing three different sizes of seed pearls, with the smallest on top and largest at bottom, it gives a stunning layered outlook. You can also make two strands out of pearls and one out of cloisonnA. For the time being you should stick to the simple form of bead forms; the seed bead, a fun, elegant, yet inexpensive choice.

A word of caution about your needle; the eye should be large enough to thread easily, but small enough to slip through your beads easily. Always test needle and make sure that it slips through two or three beads to ensure that it will pass easily through the hole.

To start cut three strands of your craft thread. One should be 21 inches, second should be 17 inches and third should be 13 inches. You might wish to change sizes of these threads once you have made this first necklace.

Start with the shortest thread the 13 inch, thread the needles and string the beads. It would be ideal if you stop 2 inches short of the end of thread, it will give you length to tie off the thread.

You have to be very careful at this stage, without loss of any bead, thread the end of 13 inch strand via the second half of your necklace clasp and tie it on. This will prevent the beads from falling off smallest strand while you do the other two.

Repeat the process with the 17 inch and 21 inch threads stopping 2 inches short of the end and tie them to the necklace clasp. Once you have finished the strands, add a drop of glue to the knots of first half and second half of the clasp to add strength to the knots. After you have completed, you should have three swags of beads roughly 18, 14 and 10 inches respectively.

Since these necklaces are so simple and easy to make, they are a big craft experience for children of 8 and above. Teens may also make and exchange these necklaces and children will discover that they are great Mother's day gifts. Children would most probably prefer to work with layer beads because they are easy to work with. A nice 05/0 or 06/0 bead is normally best for kids 8-12 and some grownups also may prefer larger beads. Tri-strand necklaces bead necklaces may be made with any kind of beads and in any kind of colors and a pendant may be added to the lowest strand, making it the most versatile of all bead necklaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is there a web site where I can find out the meanings of different types of Masai beadwork (necklaces, etc)?
I'm trying to plan a class where we make Masai-type necklaces as part of learning about Kenya, and I'd like to know what some of the specific symbolism of the beadwork is (for males and females).

  2. QUESTION:
What do you believe is the importance of art, creativity, and crafting?
in Nazi Germany and in many dictatorships artists were often times criticized, killed, or had their art destroyed because they were trying to tell the world something...

in our society, and even in other societies differences people have are often times ridiculed, and people have been killed.

in indigenous cultures, and Native people throughout the world, art is very important to them, making necklaces, clothes, beadwork, making kachina dolls, etc.

self expression is good, and a lot of people don't write, draw, paint, etc. love their artistic ability, abilities everyone has.

    • ANSWER:
Like music (that's art too) all art connects people. It's like a glue for social interactions, it says what words and actions don't. That's why art can be unwanted by dictators, the art glues together people that the dictator wants to divide. In the same notion dictators such as Hitler and Saddam Hussein also used art as propaganda to glue the people to them instead.

The mob mentality and the rejection of what people in a group think is wrong spans further than art of course but it shows just how intolerant people can be to those things who are different. It doesn't matter if it's skin colour, disability or an unique way of expression art it all boils down to intolerance. And intolerance by it self boils down to fear of the unknown.

  3. QUESTION:
hm, beadwork. Is any1 here good at making their own glass beads necklaces?
i saw a friend of mine at a party the other night and, her dress was plain simple black but her accessories was lovely! i complemented and asked where she got it from and she said she makes them herself. now i interested but a bit unsure on how to go about it. i just wasnt to make neclace to start with, for they seem the most straightforward. Just one string long necklace but it would be nice if the glass beads that makes up the necklace was my choice, you know. if this is a hobby to anyone out there, can you help. what string do i need? are there special strings? thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
Here are some hints to help you get started with creating your own necklaces. Threading beads is pretty basic, but it does help to know a few tricks if you are going to add a clasp or if you are planning on knotting between each bead.

Materials Needed to Make a Necklace

Here is a list of the things you will need for the projects. You can start with the basics and go from there.

      What you need:
      • Beads
      • Beading Thread
      • Beading Needle
      • Super Glue
      • Stretchy Elastic for Bracelets

      Other things to consider:
      • Beading Tray
      • Chain Nose Pliers
      • Clasp and Bead Tips
      • Bees Wax for Thread

      For knotting you need:
      • Tri-Cord Knotter, or Beading Awl

      For chain necklaces:
      • Cable Chain by the Foot
      • Eye Pins
      • Round Nose Pliers
      • Wire Cutters

      Bead Suppliers

I get my beads from these sources. There are many others, of course, but these are the ones I use and I am comfortable recommending them.

Fire Mountain Gems: Until recently you could only order a limited number of items from Fire Mountain on-line, but now it seems that you can buy everything you need on-line. You can also request a catalog at their web-site, or call toll free at 1-800-423-2319. They have everything you need to make jewelry, including a great selection of semi-precious gemstone beads. I always receive my order within 3 or 4 days of placing it. Fire Mountain will charge you an extra .00 for orders under .00.

Eclectic Etc. Inc. Beads and Supplies: This is an Internet only bead supplier with a great on-line selection of products. It's very easy to order from their site and I always receive my orders within 3 or 4 days. A big plus with EE Beads is that you can buy small quantities of beads for very reasonable prices. This is a great source for hobbyists who only need enough beads for one or two projects at a time. Eclectic Etc. will charge you an extra .00 for orders under .00.

Rio Grande: Visit their site and request a catalog. They have competitive prices and great customer service. I faxed my order in and received a phone call from one of their representatives to review details of the order. This was very reassuring. Rio Grande has no minimum order and only charges what they pay for shipping.

      Types of Beads

      I have worked with:

Furnace Glass Beads: These hand made beads are made in the United States. They consist of a clear glass shell with a colored core. The shapes are cylindrical, cubic and also triangular and round slices. I buy mine from Eclectic Etc. You get a random selection, but I think that just adds to the fun of working with them.

Semi-Precious Gemstones: These beads come in many sizes and shapes and are generally very consistent in quality. Fire Mountain has a full range of these beads, and Eclectic Etc. also offers a nice selection.

Czech Glass Beads: Eclectic Etc. refers to these as fancy glass beads. You can get round beads, crystal beads and many different shapes such as hearts and leaves. Czech beads are always consistent in quality.

India Glass Beads: These beads may not as consistent in quality, but they are very affordable and each is hand made. They may not be the classiest, but I have received many compliments for my India bead necklaces.

Fresh Water Pearls: These are very affordable pearls that will add a great deal of elegance to your necklaces. They may not be perfectly cylindrical cultured pearls, but they do have the same luster.

And many more beads, such as wood, bone, shell, cloisonné, gold, silver, pottery beads, etc. Flip through a catalog or surf the net to find your favorites.

      Necklace Design

The best way to plan a necklace design is to work with a beading tray. You can set up all your beads on the tray and move them around to come up with the best design. If you don't have a beading tray, use a towel to set your beads out on. That way they won't roll off the table and become a cat toy!

I usually try to mix two or three sizes of beads in my necklaces, and sometimes I mix different types of beads. But, be careful when mixing, as this will affect the weight of thread you will use, since different types of beads have different hole sizes.

      Necklace Thread

Please review these to make sure you have the right weight of string, as well as the right length, especially if you will be knotting your necklace.

Once you have your beads arranged the way you like them and your thread ready you can string your beads. If you are planning on using a clasp, then string a bead tip first.

      Knotting

Now you are ready to begin knotting. I have a special tool I use, called a Tri-Cord Knotter.

      Reasons to Knot

You don't have to knot, but I like to for a few reasons. The primary reason is that knots keep your beads from rubbing against each other. Also, If your necklace ever breaks you won't find all of your beads flying about the place. You will lose your beads, and if it happens on the dance floor, someone might get hurt! More than anything, I just think the necklace looks better. Instead of being stiff and inflexible, it drapes nicely. Knots also add to the length of your necklace, so you don't have to use as many beads. It's a bit more work, but I think it's worth it. And, with a Tri-Cord Knotter it really isn't that much more work.

      Sources for the Tri-Cord Knotter

I bought the Tri-Cord Knotter so that I could restring my cultured pearls, instead of sending them off to the jeweler. I dropped my necklace off once and I swear it came back shorter (but that may have been because a different weight of thread was used). So I decided to do it myself. Once I found out how easy it is to work with this tool, I started making my own necklaces, and I just got carried away.

You can get the Tri-Cord Knotter from Fire Mountain Gems or from Rio Grande. You can also visit the Tri-Cord Knotter site for more information on their product.

      The Knotter

How to use the Tri-Cord Knotter

When working with the Tri-Cord Knotter you will need a doubled length of thread that is at least twice as long as the necklace you are making. To make it easier to knot towards the end, I add on a good extra 10 or 15 inches. I then take the thread and pull it through a wire beading needle. I match up the two ends of the thread and place a knot at the end to hold the beads in place when I string them. And, for this method you can go ahead and string all of your beads before knotting. Once this is done you are ready to get started. Remember to start a with a bead tip if you are going to be using a clasp. If you are not using a clasp, check out the method I use to finish without a clasp.

Once your beads are strung you are ready to begin working with the knotter. Begin by placing an over hand knot up next to the first bead. Use your thumb to bring the loop up next to the bead. Then catch the loop in the knotter, and snug it as close as you can to the bead. Push the thumb spring lever towards the bead, and presto, you have a perfectly snug knot. Repeat this until you are finished. Keep in mind that you will have to pull all of the finished beads through each loop, which can get a bit cumbersome. You can switch sides and loop the unfinished beads through the loop when you are half way finished, to work more quickly.

      Traditional Knotting

Traditional knotting methods use a beading awl and tweezers to snug the knots up against the bead. Here is a method I found at About.com. I haven't tried this, but I wanted to include it for folks who don't want to bother with the tri-cord knotter. You will need a beading awl or a stiff beading needle. Again, you will need to ensure that you have sufficient thread to make up for the knots, and you can go ahead and string all of your beads if you want, but you will have to pull them through each loop. With this method each over hand loop is slipped onto the awl. The knot is then placed up against the bead, while still wrapped around the awl. The awl is then removed from the bead, and then you can use the awl to press the knot up against the bead.

      An Easier Way to Knot

I have never used this method either, but have seen it described at About.com and at RioGrande.com. With this method you will string your beads on two separate strands of thread. One strand is the carrier strand, and the other is the knotting strand, which must be at least twice as long, if not longer. You can knot as you string with this method, or string all of the beads on to the carrier string only, and then work the knotting string through the beads as you go. Start with either a bead tip or one bead through both strands. Then, take the knotting strand and make an over hand knot over the carrier thread, and snug the knot up against the bead. String another bead, make an over hand knot, and continue until finished.

If you don't want to knot just go ahead and string your beads and finish off your necklace. You will have your very own personal creation to be proud of.

About Wholesale Fashion Bead Jewelry Manufacturer, Supplier and Exporters From India

Jewelry is a most important part of fashion from the very long days. In the past it is worn as a status symbol, as well as to keep the womens safe from evils. Early in history, jewelry was a mark of status of some sort. Perhaps the only people who could wear it were of religious importance, or perhaps they were the only people who could afford it. You'll find that even though the handmade beaded jewelry from early eras seems primitive to our eyes that it was still crafted with care. For instance, the twisted torques, close fitting necklaces that were worn by the Celts, was often a sign of both manhood and wealth. Later on, jewelry was a mark of privilege and leisure; it was a show that not only could you afford to feed yourself and your loved ones, but that you could spend a lot of extra money on beautiful things. During the Victorian age in Europe, handmade beaded jewelry started taking the shapes that would be very familiar to those of us who wear jewelry today.

The Victorian era had a very strong interest in death and funerary arts, though, and this was often eerily represented in so-called mourning jewelry, where people would snip hair from their departed loved ones and weave it into lockets, broaches and rings. Sometimes this jewelry would get very elaborate and it could be quite beautiful, especially when different shades of hair were used. The beginning of the twentieth century saw the beginning of fashion jewelry. Costume jewelry, far from being as cheap or as disposable as the name implies, was actually meant to be jewelry that complemented one particular outfit. Various precious metals and gems could -and often did!- go into the production of costume jewelry. Today, we are experiencing a real renaissance as far as jewelry goes, and whether you love fine handmade beaded jewelry or simply love adorning yourself with something new every day. Wild New Jewelry

M. Graves Line

Now that anyone and everyone can sell their own creative visions everywhere online from Ebay to Etsy, jewelry designers are digging deep to come up with never-before-seen creations. Finding inspiration and resources in unlikely places like a Germandoll factory in the case of Megan Marrin's M. Graves jewelry line or shards of discarded broken glass, which Fenton designer Dana Lorenz used for her collection for designer and Michelle Obama favorite, Thakoon. Of course, you can't talk jewelry these days without hearing about downtown darling Pamela Love whose gothic pieces reference everything from religion to Native American and tribal design. Needless to say, they're all referencing the past.

M. Graves Necklace

Get all dolled up and don an M. Graves necklace crafted with 19th century Bisque doll heads excavated from the remains of what used to be an old doll factory in Thuringia, Germany. New York artist, Megan Marrin started making jewelry in 2007 as a side interest apart from her main job in fashion casting and selling her large-scale art pieces. Marin originally came across the doll pieces through a search on Ebay, but has since hired German diggers to go hunting for them in the remains of old bombed out factories from WWII. The collection doesn't just include doll heads, but everything from doll feet to doll arms, you name it. Some of the pieces almost have that cameo feel, while others are decidedly a bit more creepy, but in a good way. But, if you're looking for in the market for Victorian the old-fashioned way, check out this 19th century coral cameo brooch from Patina.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
i was wondering about a tattoo idea.i wanted to do a rosary bead necklace with a dogtag emblem around my neck?
my gpa passed away recently and i wanted to use his dog tag as a tattoo...instead of a standard dogtag neclace i wanted to use a rosary bead design because he was a very religeous person. would this be a good idea? how should i begin this? drawing it and showing the tattoo artists or what?

    • ANSWER:
you could do that, and then take it to the artist and have him tweak it; or you could just go the shop tell him what you want and have him draw it up.

  2. QUESTION:
Would it be wrong for somebody who is not Christian to wear a rosary bead necklace?
I see them sold in several shops as a fashion accessory and I like how they look however I am not Christian.

    • ANSWER:
It's not right for anyone to where rosary beads as a necklace. They're for prayer not jewelry

  3. QUESTION:
Where do you get the Rosary Bead Necklace Like Pauly D or Mike The Situation Wear on Jersey Shore?
http://www.JerseyShoreRosaryBeads.com? I see they have them in 24 colors and the quality and size looks excellent!!!

    • ANSWER:

  4. QUESTION:
is it disrespectful to wear rosary bead as a necklace?
ook so i have a friend that gave a whole speech about wearing rosary beads and the little the catholic bracelets because im not catholic...well i am christian im baptist and i think its just a necklace and a bracelet and it goes well with my outfit and its not that big a deal...besides no matter what demonation we are all still serving the same God so whats the big deal?

    • ANSWER:
It depends on your intentions, beliefs, and the particular rosary beads. If you are using your rosary beads for prayer, some people (such as myself) think you should not wear them, but others think that it is good to wear them as a necklace so they are closer to your heart. Also, some people (once again, people like myself) find it offensive if a person wears rosary beads. Many Catholics find that rosary beads should only be used for prayer and not as an accessory.
Also, my mother has rosary beads from her grandmother that were blessed by a pope. When I was little, she lectured me about trying to wear them because apparently if you wear rosary beads, the blessing is gone and you shouldn't pray with them anymore.
It would be rude for a random person to lecture you about these things, so I think you should just wear them if you want and not care about what others think.

  5. QUESTION:
Where can I buy a ROSARY BEAD necklace in NEW YORK?

    • ANSWER:
Tough question.... The city is only nominally Catholic. It may be difficult even outside the city as the country is likewise, nominally Christian.

How to make Jewelry using African Beads

Africa has been making jewelry crafted by hand for a very long time in keep with their traditions and they use African beads which come in a wide variety of colors and shapes as well as textures. You can now make your jewelry yourself using inspiration from the African styles and the raw materials like trade beads that the African jewelers themselves make use of. You can make simple African jewelry like necklaces or pendants or something as complicated as the pieces that are normally used by Africans for their rituals in healing and their spiritual ceremonies. All you require is the African beads or trade beads, a clasp, some jewelry cord or wire, crimping pliers and crimping beads. If you look at pictures or piece of African jewelry you are sure to draw inspiration from these and be able to create your own designs. Tribal jewelry from Africa includes the bone necklaces from Kenya, the coconut disc necklaces from Nigeria, crosses from Ethiopia and the Mali wedding beads. Settle on a particular style. If you would rather make a necklace with a lone pendant, then search for a bead that has an attractive color or pattern. If you intend putting together several African beads, put them against a neutral background like the black velvet that most jewelers use to find out how they combination looks. A pendant can also be put together with smaller trade beads. Get hold of some good African beads. There are quite a few sites on the Internet that deal with trade beads and other African beads and jewelry supplies and these companies buy them directly from families who make them in Africa. Some of the pieces might be very old or of limited versions and be sold at a very high price while the other trade beads are more affordable. Measure out the required length of beading thread that you will require. The length should be ideally the length that you want your necklace of trade beads to be plus an extra five inches. If you would like to use bigger African beads then you might like to replace the beading thread with cotton cord or leather. If you choose to use wire to thread them, put a crimp bead on one end along with one part of the clasp. Pass the wire through the crimp bead, make sure you tighten it and then flatten the bead with the help of the crimping pliers. The extra wire should be trimmed off. Start stringing the beads. If you are looking to have a pattern that is symmetrical, start with the center and keep adding African beads on either side. Add the other part of the clasp or a jump ring if you are using a hook clasp. Draw the wire through the clasp and cut off the extra. And then wear you beautiful necklace of trade beads and watch the heads turn.

  2. QUESTION:
What is a good resource for learning about beads?
I'd like to learn to make beaded jewelry, necklaces, coin bags, etc. Are there any good websites where I can buy supplies cheap? I need good quality at discount price, as I would like to be able to sell my work at a market. And if you know of any booksor sites with directions and tips, it would be appreciated as well. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
There are several beading magazines published in the UK and the USA. These should give you links to publications which might include instructions for making things. Apart from Firemountain I would recommend Africanbeads.com and africanbeads.co.uk for unusual supplies, and the book Beads of the World by Peter Francis Jr for historical perspective.

  3. QUESTION:
Where is the best place for buying Swarovski crystal beads?
At my local store, 18 of 5301 Swarovski beads cost about , which is way too overpriced. Artbeads has recently increased their price (in fact, they do it all the time).

I want to purchase beads in quantities of 50, so can you recommend any online/eBay stores (or actual ones) that sell Swarovski crystal beads for cheap and often give quantity discounts? I'm looking for low prices as well as low postage to Canada.

    Thanks!~

    • ANSWER:
I don't know about low postage costs, but http://www.firemountaingems.com/ has good discounts, and now they have changed it to discounts on just about everything you order at one time instead of discounts on the type of product you order.

If you get lucky on ebay you will pay about US for 100 beads... I'm not sure about shipping though.

It seams like http://cosmic.ca/crystal/index.htm has cheap Swarovski, but they seam to deal with more bulk than anything else. (They are in Canada though)

  4. QUESTION:
How do you become a wholesale bead buyer?
I have been beading for a while, but I buy everything at retail. I am going to a bead show soon and would like to get a discount on the beads I am going to buy. How do I become a wholesale buyer?

    • ANSWER:
You would need to contact your state IRS to get a tax number. It's usually free.

Then if you live in a state that charges a sales tax, you have to charge sales tax on any items you sell at shops or craft shows in your state, or internet sales if the customer lives in your state. You will need to report your sales to the state and turn over any of the tax money you have collected, but they make it easy for you to do that.
